Forest Landscape Restoration

Our model

Viridis Terra International is proposing a model for forest and agroforest landscape restoration (IFLR) of large degraded areas that adapts itself to the institutional conditions of a given country or region.

This model uses an approach based on respect of land use capacity and watershed management at the landscape level to stimulate soil conservation and revitalization through forest and agroforest restoration.
This model ensures the sequestration of millions of tons of carbon in sustainable and resilient restored ecosystems, and the reconstruction of biodiversity hotspots and critical habitats, thereby encouraging climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Before
  1. Deforested and eroded mountains
  2. Landscape desertification
  3. Non-resilient and low-productive agriculture
  4. Dry and polluted river
  5. Degraded riverbanks
After
  1. Reforested mountains
  2. Forest plantations
  3. Diversified natural forest
  4. Climate-resilient and productive agroforestry
  5. Healthy watershed

Viridis Terra International and its technical partners use high technologies, such as biotechnologies, clean hi-tech tree factories, and remote sensing and traceability tools. These technologies, which include ViridisTerraTM’s own patent-pending innovation, increase, by up to two to three times, survival and productivity of trees on degraded lands compared to the industry average, thereby increasing tremendously the success rate of IFLR activities.

The unique Viridis Terra International model for IFLR comprises the online platform TreesOfLives where it is possible to safely buy or invest in high-quality certified deforestation-free forest and agroforest commodities, and carbon and biodiversity offset credits to compensate for carbon emissions and biodiversity loss.

Furthermore, through its IFLR projects, Viridis Terra International is engaged with local stakeholders with training and capacity-building while promoting the development of green economy. Green economic activities focus on developing sustainable markets and value chains for goods and services produced on the restored lands; creating an environment attractive to the agri-food, forest, and bioenergy industries; and improving human well-being, building social equity while reducing environmental risks and scarcities.

  1. Tree plantations on deforested and degraded lands
  2. Sustainable forest conservation and management
  3. Use of wood in infrastructure construction
  4. Power generation from wood biomass rather than fossil coal
  5. Biofuel production from wood biomass
  6. Use of high carbon by-products as green fertilizer in agriculture

Our IFLR projects generate negative carbon emissions through the removal of atmospheric CO2 by reforesting degraded lands and producing bioenergy and renewable resources such as lumber, biomass, and high-carbon by-products. The conservation and sustainable management of restored forests and the increase usage of wood in infrastructure allow carbon storage over the long term. Bioenergy from wood is an alternative to the usage of fossil fuels for electricity or transport and is almost carbon neutral when sustainably managed on degraded lands. High-carbon by-products created during the project activities, such as biochar, can be used as soil amendments. These by-products sequestrate stable carbon in soil while improving productivity and promoting carbon farming activities.
